This week’s Mid-Week tease, hosted by the inimitable Sandra Bunino, is a special Halloween treat. Since I don’t write that much paranormal under this pen name, I thought I’d give you a sneak peek into the start of The P.U.R.E. #2, working titled Pure Chance. I was planning on working on this for NaNo, if I do it this year, which starts this Saturday, November 1.
In this opening scene, Gayle and Jon are back and are jetting to Las Vegas (unedited):
Las Vegas looked like a very hot desert and an inhospitable place to crash land. The thermals were brutal, tossing our little plane ruthlessly. Jon would have to pry my fingers off the armrest when we landed, assuming we survived.
I glanced his way. He turned and caught my eye, leaned over and kissed me on the nose. “Almost on the ground.”
“Hopefully still able to walk erect and not incinerated beyond recognition.”
Jon peeled my fingers off the armrest and held my hand in his. “I got you, ” he murmured.
“Who’s got you?”
He glanced past me toward the window I sat next to. “We’re looking good. Don’t worry.”
Eyes squeezed shut, I chanted to myself, “Safe, safe, safe.”
A thermal tipped our wings to the side. I clutched Jon’s hand more tightly.
Safe, safe, safe.
The wings leveled off, and then we fell.
A few gasps blended with my own.
“Whoa! What a rush!” Jon exclaimed.
Again the wings wobbled as the hand of an invisible gremlin, as malevolent as it was mischievous played with us.
Safe, safe, safe.
My blood rushed to my toes, eager little piggies for terra firma, only it threatened to take the contents of my lunch with me. As the blood abandoned ship, malaise crept into the void. Someone shoved cotton in my ears and then spun me around and around. A cold sweat popped out over my skin. I briefly pondered if crashing might be the lesser evil.
Sick, sick, sick.
With my free hand I fumbled in the seat pocket in front of me. Jon let go of my other hand when I tugged it away to aid in my frantic search.
“Gayle? Are you okay?”
Sick, sick, sick.
My fingers found the white paper bag. I opened it, bent my head over and hurled.
What a great way to start …
Way to start what??? An elopement? An assignment? A vacation? What? What?
Honestly? I don’t know!! Not yet. Still plotting this puppy.
Just FYI…Purely Relative (The P.U.R.E. #1.5) will be on sale for Thanksgiving starting November 1st. Boss Overboard, my latest release, is still on sale at Evernight for 25% off. And speaking of Evernight sales, don’t miss their Paranormal sale with selected paranormal titles discounted 25%. There’s a certain author I know who writes humorous succubus stories you might also like. 😉

Yay! I adore Gayle and Jon, but so gross, lol. Fabulous tease, Claire. 😀
I love that you’ve shared this gem with us when you’re still not sure where it’s going. Loved this tease. Reminded me of why I never take puddle jumpers. 🙂
Yipe! What a great snippet, Claire. And yeah, not a great way to start anything. 🙂
Hi Claire! Jon just became my book boyfriend. He’s exactly the guy I’d want sitting next to me, kissing me on the nose (le sigh) if my plane were going down. Please figure out the “what” and keep writing! xoxo
great tease 🙂
Oh no, poor Gayle! I’m confident she’ll be okay. I mean, she’s in VEGAS! I’m looking forward to finding out what these two do in Sin City.
Thanks for teasing with us! xoxo
Great tease. the start of what indeed? 🙂
I think they’re on an assignment 😛
I love it, but I feel for Gayle 🙂
Great tease, well done!
A no-no way to start anything! It would make an interesting journey, I guess.
I really loved the humor in this scene even though she was afraid. Great teaser. I hope you Nano had a great start.
