Snippet Sunday — Boss Overboard goes on an excursion

snippetSundayWelcome to Snippet Sunday, where we post a few lines from a book we’ve published or one in process. Comments always welcomed, but your visit is already pretty awesome.

My snippet comes from my recently released contemporary romance, Boss Overboard. In this scene, our heroine, Lydia, and hero, Paul, are returning from their first land excursion in the Azores after being at sea on a transatlantic cruise for many days. Lydia is Paul’s boss…or so she thinks.

Lydia wore her exhaustion like an apology—humble and a little embarrassed. They’d hiked for hours on rough terrain, and she had lugged a few bars of gold in her backpack judging from its weight. Damn stubborn woman had refused to let him carry any of her load, but he’d finally wrestled it away from her on the return trip.

Back on the bus and headed for the ship, she sat in her seat as if in a daze. Her eyelids drooped once, twice and then she was out for a few seconds until the bus hit a pothole, jerking her awake. She was fighting a losing battle but wasn’t going to go gently into slumberland.

When he could stand it no longer, he moved and sat next to her. “Poor thing,” he cooed like a father to a child as he threw his arm around her shoulder and drew her against him.

Boss Overboard blurb:

An all expenses paid, trans-Atlantic cruise has romance written all over it…unless you’re the poor sap who has to inspect the toilets and time the cafeteria lines. As if secret-shopping her company’s failing cruise ship isn’t bad enough, Lydia Johnson is forced to bring along a “top talent” new hire as her assistant. With a heart barely healed from her ex-fiancé’s deceit, she’s in no mood to train a man who might cheat her out of an overdue promotion.

Paul Thomas may be new to J.P. Theriot Enterprises, but he certainly knows his way around cruise ships. The Cajun charmer also isn’t shy about pursuing his desires, including his wary, but oh-so-sexy-when-she lets-her-hair-down manager. He’s shared more about himself with Lydia than any other woman…except who he really is–J.P. Theriot.
