Weekend Writing Warriors: Sniffing Around the Edges #8Sunday

www_tinyWelcome to Weekend Writing Warriors! This is one of several successors to Six Sentence Sunday. I also post it as part of Snippet Sunday:

As mentioned before, I have a new release coming out around April 30th called Purely Relative (The P.U.R.E., #1.5). Weekly eights from that story between now and release date!

Setup: Gayle survived the Thanksgiving meal at Jon’s parents’ house—barely. There was a sort of unfortunate finale in the powder room caused by Gayle’s snooping in the cabinet over the toilet. To her horror, a crossword puzzle magazine fell out and into the toilet. But something slipped out of the book and fluttered to the floor—a receipt from a jewelry store. Gayle has just confessed about the puzzle book to Jon on the way home, but he’s assured her it was no big deal because the book was his. She has not mentioned the receipt to anyone.

On the other hand, if it really was his puzzle book, and the receipt fell out of it, did that mean Jon ordered the ring? OMG, OMG, OMG! I stole a glance at his expression. He didn’t have one. What a time for a poker face! Fine. I’d just have to sniff around the edges a little.

“You do crossword puzzles in your parents’ powder room?” I asked, my arms crossed.

Finally! Not a ‘poor Gayle’ moment, but it’s still a typical nosy Gayle moment.

  1. Hey Claire! Congrats on the upcoming release! I smiled while reading your eight. Because of the set-up and scene, I felt like the crossword puzzle event is ‘an itch’. Both Gayle and the reader have to scratch, but is it a good idea or should we leave well enough alone and dream?

  2. LOL…how many of us has done exactly that? *raises hand…guilty as charged* Though I admit nothing ever fell in the toilet. Nicely done. Hmm…is there a ring? Makes me want more.

    • The book was shoved in there, almost guaranteed to come tumbling out the next time anyone opened the cabinet. Hmmm…

  3. Something tells me it’s not what Gayle thinks it is…only because Jon’s poker face could never stay that way if she’d just spoiled his surprise.
    Congrats on the release!!

    • good observation and you’re right…he’s not that good with poker faces where Gayle is concerned, not now that they are involved.

    • Gayle thinks she’s being indirect, but Jon’s no fool. He’s learning fast from her. Her days of shocking him are waning.

    • It sure can! I’m always afraid those cabinets are booby-trapped…and maybe the Cripps’ was…hmmm….

    • Yeah…Jon really has no idea of some of the snooping Gayle gets into. He’s learning…but not fast enough.

    • Thanks, Siobhan! She’s pretty shrewd…but so is he. Still…he’s kinda got a lot on his mind at the moment. 😉

    • I know, right? This would totally happen to me, too. Karma likes to pay back bad guest behavior. LOL
